As more and more medical data begins to go digital, the necessity of digital security is increasing. HIPAA guidelines require that medical providers keep data protected. While many healthcare providers are managing security fine, some providers complain that their data is not protected. This begs the question: what are their security options?

When it comes to storing medical data, organizations essentially have two choices:

Manage Your Own Data

In this scenario, healthcare providers are responsible for all of their own hardware and software management. The data is all stored on-sight. This is generally a good for smaller healthcare organizations.

Some advantages:

• More Flexibility:  Companies can select the applications and equipment they prefer.

• Complete Control: All of the data is local, and any changes to where or how files are stored is in the organization’s control.

• Self-Monitored Data Protection: Security is in the organization’s hands. Compliance with HIPAA and other healthcare regulations can be handled internally instead of trusting it to another group.

Outsource your Data Storage

With many outsource providers, the software necessary to input and retrieve medical data is provided. They provide the hardware and tech support. This option is generally utilized by larger healthcare organizations.

Some Advantages:

• Low Upfront Cost: Many outsource providers offer packages that include different levels of service and storage. You save money on hardware and IT costs.

• External Support: Instead of having a large IT staff, the outsource provider offers will provide its own external support. The data center manages the servers for you.

• Quality Data Protection: A data storage center is likely to utilize up-to-date equipment and quality server protection. Some data centers ensure HIPAA level protection.

• Less Work: Because someone else is managing your data, healthcare organizations are free to focus on just that: healthcare..
